Welcome to the 20th Annual Humanitarian Day, we have been providing Neighborly for the past 20 Ramadans. HDAY is now considered as the most consistent event during the month of Ramadan ~ We are thankful for the support.
Summary of HDAY’s History
Humanitarian Day first began as a simple effort, to only serve 100 people in Ramadan/ 1999. The Masjid Ibaadillah community (now known as the Slauson Muslim Community) were inspired by reading verses of Neighborly Needs, in the month of Ramadan (Chapter 107.)
This effort became a tradition during the month of Ramadan. The ILM Foundation then officially named and organized Humanitarian Day in 2001. As a strategic effort to counteract Islamophobic pressures that were initiated after the tragedy attacks on both Twin Towers. This is when Imam Saadiq Saafir’s said “Let’s put our faith into action.”
ILM Foundation (Humanitarian Day’s Founders) organized a network called the Coalition Preserve Human Dignity. This coalition is compromised of volunteers, organizations, and institutions who share resources for humanitarian projects throughout the year.
HDAY was expanded to 27 U.S. domestic cities between 2004-06 with support from Islamic Relief. In 2007, the ILM Foundation decided to refocus its efforts in California, as the Southern California’s homeless crisis began to rise. Islamic Relief created the “Day of Dignity” serving in various communities across the United States. Today Humanitarian Day in Southern California focuses not only providing neighborly needs, but the ILM Foundation are community organizers with LA Voice; so we can advocate and shift policy for homelessness in Los Angeles County.
20 Ramadans later in 2019, Humanitarian Day is where people of different faith traditions, community partners, civic officials and families; all gather to pursue a good deed.
